| Using Sign Language combined with spoken words enhances communication skills in young children. | ||||||||||
| Signing helps children to communicate wants/needs before the development of speech ~ Imagine your 10-month-old using signs to tell you he wants milk or juice! Signing decreases frustration and tantrums ~ Children with developing language are often frustrated because their caregivers do not understand them. The sound "ba" could mean "ball", "bottle", "baby" or "bath". When a child combines that sound with the sign for her desired object or action, she is understood by her caregiver and a tantrum is avoided. Signs are a quiet mode of behavior management ~ Use signs to cue your child to sit down at the local story-hour, or to say "please" or "thank you" to Grandma, all without ever using your voice. Signing reduces pointing and whining to get desired objects/ actions ~ Knowledge of the signs for foods, toys and other parts of daily routine gives children an effective alternative to pointing and whining. Signing builds self-esteem ~ When children understand that they can have an effect on their environment they feel important. Signing empowers children by giving them the means to affect their environment before they are capable of doing so with spoken language. Signing provides additional opportunities for parent-child bonding ~ The time you spend with your child in signing classes and engaged in mutually enjoyable activities at home is quality time. The time you spend together learning to communicate and understand each other is special and important to your child. Signing provides a usable mode of communication for children whose hearing is interrupted by frequent ear infections and fluid in the ears ~ Chronic ear infections and fluid in the ears can cause interruptions in optimal hearing, and many of these children develop speech and language delays as a result. Signing gives children a way to continue with language learning despite these issues, minimizing the language delays that are so often associated with chronic ear problems. |
